San Fernando magistrate Alicia Chankar yesterday ordered that money confiscated from a woman selling alcohol without a licence should be donated to the Guardian's Neediest Cases Fund. The woman was arrested and charged by acting Cpl Anthony Dorset of the San Fernando City Police. She was caught selling beers from a cooler at the Marabella market on Sunday. Police said they seized a cooler with almost two cases of beers and a total of $195 in cash.
The woman appeared before Chankar yesterday and pleaded guilty to selling intoxicating liquor without a licence. Having no previous or pending matters, she was reprimanded and discharged under Section 71 of the Summary Offences Act, which means no conviction will be recorded against her. The magistrate then ordered her to donate the $195 to the Guardian Neediest Cases Fund, dispose of the liquor and return the cooler to the owner. The fund, which was started in 1934, has assisted thousands of less fortunate families in its 78 years.
