The son of a Princes Town musician who was murdered last month appeared in court on Thursday charged with assaulting a policeman and maliciously wounding another man. Kareem Stanisclaus, 26, was granted $25,000 bail by Princes Town magistrate Debra Quintyne.
Stanisclaus was shot and arrested by the police on the same day that his father Jester, 62, was found murdered at their home. The charges stemmed from an incident on April 19 on the Naparima- Mayaro Road in Princes Town. It is alleged that he maliciously wounded Mooniram Samaroo and on the same day he assaulted PC Keil King to prevent the lawful detention of himself.
He was shot twice by the police and remanded in custody. On Thursday, he appeared in court limping and with a bandaged hand. Court prosecutor Sgt Krishna Bedasie did not object to bail. On the basis of inquiries by police complainant WPC Chance, the prosecutor requested that the accused be sent to the St Ann's Psychiatric Hospital. He said Stanisclaus' mother was in court.
The magistrate, however, denied the request. Stanisclaus is expected to reappear in court on May 9.
