Minutes after a Gonzales teenager appeared before a Port-of-Spain magistrate for a firearms offence yesterday, a fracas erupted outside the courthouse as he attempted to escape police officers waiting to execute a warrant on him. Dexter Samuel, 19, appeared before Magistrate Melvin Daniel in the Port-of-Spain Fourth Magistrates' Court around 9.30 am, charged with two others for an offence last year.
Soon after obtaining an adjournment date, Samuel and a female relative walked out of the court to find several officers waiting outside. Realising the officers' intent, Samuel's relative shouted at him to run. Police on duty outside the court heard the commotion and chased him. Samuel was held steps away from the courthouse along St Vincent Street.
His relative escaped. Samuel was placed in a holding cell and was later taken to the Four Roads Police Station, Diego Martin where the outstanding warrant was executed on him. He will appear in court on Monday.
