The man who robbed, beat and disfigured former beauty queen Candice Worrell is still on the run. Relatives fear he might have committed other robberies, yet police officers have made no progress in finding him, even though they recovered Worrell's stolen cellular phone two months ago.
In the meantime, Worrell, who represented T&T at the 2009 Miss Tourism Queen International in China, continues to make slow progress, family members said yesterday in an interview. No attempt has been made by the Government to send her abroad for physiotherapy or medical care. Her limbs have already started to curl. She cannot speak.
She recognises some members of her family but is unable to communicate except with screams, groans and feeble hand grasps. During yesterday's interview, Worrell's mother Susan said she was disheartened by the lack of care shown by the Government and the police.
"My daughter represented this country internationally. The least we expected was that she would be sent abroad for treatment. She is getting good care here but in the initial stage she did not get immediate medical attention," Susan said. She said on January 20, Worrell was found lying in a corridor at her workplace-Jenexcon Engineering-where she worked as an office manager.
It is believed that Worrell went back to her office around 5.20 pm to get her cellular phone when she was attacked. The assailant smashed her jaw, broke her cheekbones and struck her on the back the head, leaving her with a swollen brain. Susan said her daughter spent more than 24 hours at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex without getting any medical care.
"They had her in a corner at Mount Hope. She was screaming and screaming. Her face was swollen and when they finally admitted her to Intensive Care, she fell into a coma," Susan recalled. She said watching her daughter deteriorate slowly was too much for her to bear.
However, Worrell's friends and her fiancé W Connection Football Club captain Jan-Michael Williams, pulled her through. Susan said they formed a support group called "I Love Candy" and raised funds to foot her medical bills at St Clair Medical Centre, St Clair. Since the discovery of Worrell's stolen cellular phone, Susan said she has been upset about the police inability to find her assailant.
"We want to know why the police cannot go through the phone records and make arrests. We are seeing other cases where the police are moving swiftly, yet they are dragging their feet with my daughter's case," Susan said. Meanwhile, councillor for Marabella West Gloria Calliste said she would make representation to the San Fernando City Corporation to give assistance to the family.
Detectives of the Chaguanas Police Station said yesterday they were still investigating the matter but could give no further details on the case. Worrell, a former beauty queen competed for the title of Miss Trinidad and Tobago several years ago. She was also crowned Miss Point Fortin in 2006.
