Gov­ern­ment has al­lo­cat­ed 65 acres of land, be­tween Wa­ter­loo and Or­ange Val­ley, for the con­struc­tion of an in­ter­na­tion­al-stan­dard au­to-sport com­plex to house drag- rac­ing, cir­cuit-rac­ing, Solodex, cart­ing and all oth­er forms of mo­tor sports. This was con­firmed yes­ter­day by Ter­tiary Ed­u­ca­tion Min­is­ter Fazal Karim.

Speak­ing at the open­ing of the ac­com­mo­da­tion for Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies (UWI) med­ical stu­dents at the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal yes­ter­day, Karim said: "We will be try­ing our best to get our young peo­ple off our streets." He al­so said Gov­ern­ment planned to trans­form Wa­ter­loo in­to the hub of ship-build­ing and mar­itime train­ing.

A tourist in­for­ma­tion cen­tre and a weath­er sta­tion would be es­tab­lished there, Karim said. He said the 12 pri­ma­ry schools and eight sec­ondary schools in Wa­ter­loo would use and be the cus­to­di­ans of that weath­er sta­tion. He al­so said Dr Roger Pul­warty, who won a No­bel Prize for his work on cli­mate change, with spe­cif­ic ref­er­ence to El Niño, will as­sist in hold­ing cli­ma­to­log­i­cal cours­es through UTT at Wa­ter­loo.

Pul­warty is a lec­tur­er at the Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies' Cave Hill Cam­pus, Bar­ba­dos, and al­so at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Col­orado.
