A 53-year-old man has drowned in the Cunu­pia Riv­er while fish­ing with rel­a­tives. Short­ly af­ter noon on Mon­day, Ku­mar Bachew of Lime­head Road, Chase Vil­lage, Ch­agua­nas, went to the banks of the Cunu­pia Riv­er in Fe­lic­i­ty on a fish­ing ex­pe­di­tion. Bachew was ac­com­pa­nied by his broth­er and cousin.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors said about an hour af­ter ar­riv­ing at the lo­ca­tion, Bachew slipped off the bank of the riv­er while cast­ing a net. Bachew, whom rel­a­tives de­scribed as an in­ex­pe­ri­enced swim­mer, dis­ap­peared un­der wa­ter. Po­lice were con­tact­ed and a team of of­fi­cers of the Ch­agua­nas CID led by In­sp Wayne Lawrence was dis­patched to the scene.

Around 5 pm, with the as­sis­tance of Coast Guard divers, Bachew's body was re­cov­ered a short dis­tance away from where he fell in­to the riv­er. Lawrence is con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions.
