A 53-year-old man has drowned in the Cunupia River while fishing with relatives. Shortly after noon on Monday, Kumar Bachew of Limehead Road, Chase Village, Chaguanas, went to the banks of the Cunupia River in Felicity on a fishing expedition. Bachew was accompanied by his brother and cousin.
Investigators said about an hour after arriving at the location, Bachew slipped off the bank of the river while casting a net. Bachew, whom relatives described as an inexperienced swimmer, disappeared under water. Police were contacted and a team of officers of the Chaguanas CID led by Insp Wayne Lawrence was dispatched to the scene.
Around 5 pm, with the assistance of Coast Guard divers, Bachew's body was recovered a short distance away from where he fell into the river. Lawrence is continuing investigations.
