Se­cu­ri­ty cam­eras and crash bar­ri­ers are among the mea­sures in a mas­sive road safe­ty cam­paign, the Min­istry of Trans­port has an­nounced. In a re­lease yes­ter­day, Trans­port Min­is­ter De­vant Ma­haraj re­peat­ed his warn­ing that a mo­tor ve­hi­cle is a po­ten­tial weapon in the hands of mo­torists.

"If not han­dled with due care and at­ten­tion, it can cause in­jury or death to pas­sen­gers," he said. The min­istry's an­nounce­ment and warn­ing came short­ly af­ter the fa­tal crash yes­ter­day morn­ing in which four peo­ple died. Jus­tice Wen­dell Ka­ga­loo, act­ing Chief Jus­tice, who was in a ve­hi­cle in­volved in the crash, is in crit­i­cal con­di­tion at the In­ten­sive Care Unit (ICU) at the Er­ic Williams Med­ical Sci­ences Com­plex.

Com­ment­ing on the ac­ci­dent, Ma­haraj urged dri­vers to ex­er­cise ut­most care and at­ten­tion on the na­tion's roads. He said he in­tends to ap­proach Cab­i­net to re­lease fund­ing for a mas­sive road safe­ty cam­paign to re­duce the car­nage on the na­tion's road­ways.
