Independent Senator Dr James Armstrong says he will support any legislation that advocates same-sex relationships. Delivering his contribution in the Upper House on the Children Bill on Friday, Armstrong said he mentioned a very long time ago "that my position is that I support and will support any legislation that comes in front of me that advocates same-sex relationships."
Armstrong pointed out that the Bill by itself cannot have the effect required and children, parents and teachers need to be educated. "We cannot protect our children in a warped society." He also suggested that certain clauses in the Bill be reviewed, in particular, the interpretation of child pornography and a child frequenting or residing in a brothel.
"We also seem to have an obsession with sexual penetration. I think before it gets to the business of sexual penetration one can commit an act that is an offence." Armstrong drew reference to a paper done by the Institute of Gender and Development Studies called Breaking the Silence, which the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, had in its possession, that showed in 2006 there were 160 cases of child sexual abuse.
Of that figure, Armstrong said, 16 per cent were incest cases, with 85 per cent being young girls. "We know that things are falling apart. We have failed as a society."
