After narrowly surviving a car crash on Sunday morning which claimed the lives of four friends, Appeal Court judge Wendell Kangaloo yesterday remained warded in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. Kangaloo, 56, of Westmoorings, sustained serious head injuries in the crash. He remained warded in a stable but critical condition at the hospital. In an interview at the hospital yesterday, court protocol and information manager Jones P Madeira said doctors at the facility performed CT scans to Kangaloo's cranium to gain deeper appreciation of his injuries. Madeira said the senior judge would be continuously monitored by doctors over the next 24 hours. Chief Justice Ivor Archie, who returned to Trinidad on Sunday evening after a trip to the United States, also visited Kangaloo yesterday.
Madiera also extended condolences to the relatives and friends of the four victims of the car crash. In a brief interview, Archie said he was unable to comment on Kangaloo's condition but noted he had faith in the doctors. He admitted he was unable to speak to Kangaloo during the 15-minute visit. At around 5.30 am on Sunday, Kangaloo was travelling east along the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway when a white Honda Civic collided with the judge's Toyota Prado, just after Savannah Drive, Trincity. The occupants of the Honda Civic were Ryan Ramthahal, 25, of Industry Lane, Belmont; Jevon Spencer, 22, an employee of the Port-of-Spain City Corporation, of Willis Street, Belmont; Jeremie Soyer, 24, of St James and 16-year-old Megan Richards of Bagatelle, Diego Martin. They were returning home from the opening of a club in Arima. Kangaloo, a horse owner, was on his way to the Arima Race Club at Santa Rosa to witness early morning gallops. Travelling with the judge were two policemen-Constables Martin Caesar and Terrence Fortune-who had been assigned as Kangaloo's security detail during his stint as acting Chief Justice. They suffered minor injuries in the crash and were discharged from hospital yesterday morning.
