Prime Min­is­ter Kam­la Per­sad-Bisses­sar has ex­pressed shock and sad­ness at the news of the dev­as­tat­ing ve­hic­u­lar ac­ci­dent which left four peo­ple dead and act­ing Chief Jus­tice Wen­dell Kan­ga­loo in crit­i­cal con­di­tion. In a re­lease from the Prime Min­is­ter's Of­fice, Per­sad-Bisses­sar said: "I am pro­found­ly sad­dened by the news. I ex­press my con­do­lences to and sym­pa­thies with the fam­i­lies of those who have lost their lives. I al­so pray for the quick re­cov­ery of Jus­tice Kan­ga­loo," she said.

The Prime Min­is­ter al­so said the ac­ci­dent brings in­to fo­cus "the ab­solute need for greater care and cau­tion on the roads, as just one mo­ment of in­dis­cre­tion can cre­ate im­mense dan­ger and cause the fa­tal­i­ty of in­no­cent cit­i­zens. "In an in­stant the peace and hap­pi­ness of a num­ber of fam­i­lies has been thrown in­to chaos. The Gov­ern­ment will con­tin­ue to pur­sue its re­spon­si­bil­i­ty to cit­i­zens by im­ple­ment­ing strong mea­sures to curb road ac­ci­dents, but cit­i­zens must al­so take re­spon­si­bil­i­ty for each oth­er," she said.

Per­sad-Bisses­sar is out of the coun­try on of­fi­cial busi­ness. She is due to re­turn to­mor­row.
