It is yet to be decided who will be the candidates in the June 29 election of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago but it seems that Ramesh Maharaj may be a contender. Legal sources said yesterday, however, that junior attorneys, had objected to Maharaj contesting the election. One legal source said Maharaj might be going up for the position of vice president while Karl Hudson-Phillips, QC, is yet to decide if he will seek the presidency.
Maharaj said he had not been formally approached but "heard talk from lawyers" that he was being considered. "No one formally has approached me. But I did hear other lawyers talking that if Mr Hudson-Phillips did go up for presidency I might be selected for vice-president," Maharaj said. "It is something I would have to think about because it would mean I would have to deviate from my law practice."
Israel Khan, SC, who was contesting the post of presidency against former association president Dana Seetahal, SC, said yesterday he was still undecided. "The young lawyers want me to go up for presidency. If Mr Hudson-Phillips does not go up, then I will run. Mr Hudson-Phillips still has to give us a decision whether or not he is running," Khan said. Contacted yesterday, Seetahal offered no comment.
