Police have recovered two guns used in an attempted robbery at a bar in Siparia on Sunday. Two suspects were also arrested and charged with a series of offences arising out of the incident. They are expected to appear in the Siparia Magistrates' Court today. Police said around 5.55 pm last Sunday, three men, two armed with guns, attempted to rob several patrons at a bar on Quinam Road, Mendez Village.
During a struggle with two patrons, one of the suspects fired a shot. No one was injured. The men then fled in a gold-coloured Almera which was intercepted by the police about a mile and half from the crime scene. Only two occupants were in the car-a 23-year-old labourer of Princes Town and a 25-year-old labourer of Indian Walk. The men were detained at Siparia CID.
The day after, Cpl Sheldon Albacksingh, Cpl Brian Ramsingh, Cpl Solomon and a party of officers returned to the area. In the bushes, they found the guns used in the robbery-a 9 mm pistol with four rounds of ammunition and a .45 revolver with four rounds of ammunition and one spent shell.
Police said the men, who had previous convictions for firearm-related offences, were identified at an identification parade. They were charged with attempted robbery, shooting with intent, possession of arms and ammunition, possession of arms and ammunition to endanger life, and discharging a firearm. The exercise was co-ordinated by acting Supt Ramlal, Insp Seedarie and included officers from Siparia CID, South Western Task Force, National Security Operations Centre and the Canine Unit.
