A 52-year-old San Fernando man was up to late yesterday hospitalised under police guard after he injured himself while trying to escape police custody. The man allegedly ran into a glass wall while being interrogated at the Criminal Investigation Department of the San Fernando Police Station. He sustained multiple cuts and bruises from the incident.
According to a report, the man was arrested around noon after store owners caught him shoplifting at a clothing outlet on High Street. PCs Lee and Jointe responded to a report of robbery and found several stolen items on the man, including several pieces of underwear that he took from a few stores.
While at the station, the suspect complained of chest pains and police contacted the Emergency Health Services. While awaiting the ambulance, the man allegedly got up and ran towards the glass wall, crashing through it and falling to the ground. He was immediately restrained by officers and eventually taken to the San Fernando General Hospital. The incident prompted visits from senior officers to the station. Investigations are continuing.
