A 52-year-old San Fer­nan­do man was up to late yes­ter­day hos­pi­talised un­der po­lice guard af­ter he in­jured him­self while try­ing to es­cape po­lice cus­tody. The man al­leged­ly ran in­to a glass wall while be­ing in­ter­ro­gat­ed at the Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tion De­part­ment of the San Fer­nan­do Po­lice Sta­tion. He sus­tained mul­ti­ple cuts and bruis­es from the in­ci­dent.

Ac­cord­ing to a re­port, the man was ar­rest­ed around noon af­ter store own­ers caught him shoplift­ing at a cloth­ing out­let on High Street. PCs Lee and Jointe re­spond­ed to a re­port of rob­bery and found sev­er­al stolen items on the man, in­clud­ing sev­er­al pieces of un­der­wear that he took from a few stores.

While at the sta­tion, the sus­pect com­plained of chest pains and po­lice con­tact­ed the Emer­gency Health Ser­vices. While await­ing the am­bu­lance, the man al­leged­ly got up and ran to­wards the glass wall, crash­ing through it and falling to the ground. He was im­me­di­ate­ly re­strained by of­fi­cers and even­tu­al­ly tak­en to the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal. The in­ci­dent prompt­ed vis­its from se­nior of­fi­cers to the sta­tion. In­ves­ti­ga­tions are con­tin­u­ing.
