A summons has been issued for a relative of Jason Lord to appear in court on a charge of assaulting a police officer at the San Juan station last week. Lord, 29, of Laventille Road, San Juan, was found hanging by his belt inside the police cell after 11 am on Thursday. Video surveillance showed Lord knelt and prayed before he took his life.
Investigators said Lord was at the station the week before with a prior matter where he was owing a man $4,000 but repaid $3,000 for a small plot of land and a house. Police said while Lord visited the station, he was informed that there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest for the non-payment of $32,000 in child maintenance.
Investigators said while Lord was at the station, he was served by a warrants officer. Soon after, he was found hanging in his cell. Relatives who later visited the station allegedly slapped an officer and ripped his shirt during a fracas. Police claimed Lord was searched and checked several times while in custody, according to the Standing Orders which is every half-hour but this was reduced to every 15 minutes in his case. Insp Samuel is continuing investigations.
