Three men accused of going on an overnight crime spree in May, breaking into five San Fernando businesses, including Pizza Boys/Church's Chicken, and making off with $21,829 in cash and stolen items, appeared in court on Monday. Joseph Mulchansingh, of La Romaine, Curtis Barrow, of Arima and David White, of San Fernando, all appeared before acting Deputy Chief Magistrate Rajendra Rambachan jointly charged with five counts of breaking and entering businesses at Mikado House, Pointe-a-Pierre Road, San Fernando.
Mulchansingh, represented by attorney Chateram Sinanan, and White, who was represented by attorney Ainsley Lucky, were granted $150,000 bail each, while White was refused bail. Barrow did not have an attorney. Sinanan, in his application for bail, said his client was beaten by police while in custody. He also said Mulchansingh suffered from a serious bout of tuberculosis last year and had to have surgery.
At this, Rambachan promptly rolled his chair away from his desk, took out a handkerchief, wiped his face and dusted his shoulders. He then covered his nose briefly and asked, "Is he still suffering from tuberculosis?" Sinanan said he did not know. He said Mulchansingh requires daily dressing for his surgical incisions.
The men were charged with breaking into four beauty salons in Mikado House and stealing a quantity of wigs and weaves between May 24 and 25, 2012. They were also charged with breaking into Pizza Boys/Church's Chicken's Pointe-a-Pierre Road branch and stealing $14,894.23 in cash on May 25.
Mulchansingh was charged separately with having implements in his possession, namely a sledgehammer, an electronic grinder, an extension cord and a pipe wrench, which police had reasonable cause to believe were used to break into the fast-food outlet. The charges were laid indictably by PC Matloo and other officers. The men were not called upon to plead.
