Attorney General Anand Ramlogan says Works and Infrastructure Minister Jack Warner has been cleared of alleged bribery charges against him in a FIFA-related matter. Ramlogan was asked to comment on varying comments by Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs and Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard.
Gibbs said the police had no reason to continue investigations into the matter, but the DPP said there could be grounds to pursue the matter under the Customs Act. But Ramlogan said he did not share that view. "For now, as far as I am concerned, it seems as though Minister Warner is in the clear and there can be no doubt whatsoever about that," he added.
Ramlogan said after he spoke with unnamed officials seeking to have the matter clarified, he was left with "the distinct and unmistakable impression that Mr Warner has been cleared." He said with respect to possible investigations relating to the Customs Act "from my briefing and what I have been told it doesn't appear that there is anything to go on in that regard."
Warner was alleged to have paid money to member states of the Caribbean Football Union in Trinidad last year to ensure their support for Mohammed bin Hammam, who was vying for the FIFA president post.
