A group of police officers came in for high praise after they foiled an early morning robbery at a shopping mall in Tunapuna. Around 2.15 am, officers of the Tunapuna CID, led by Sgt Basdeo Sinanan and including Cpls Dexter Edwards, Keron Joseph and Newton, were on patrol along the Eastern Main Road when they noticed a security door at the Tunapuna Plaza ajar and two men removing electrical items.
When the lawmen identified themselves, one of the suspects dropped the computer he was holding and fled the scene. The other suspect, a 22-year-old from Wilkinson Street, Tunapuna, who was found removing an LCD television, was detained and charged.
A sledgehammer that was used by the thieves to gain entry into the building was also seized. The suspect is expected to appear before a Tunapuna magistrate today. Up to late yesterday, the second suspect was being sought by detectives.
