The T&T Guardian is now the first and only newspaper in T&T to introduce a barcode system to its newspaper. Readers may have noticed the inclusion of a small barcode on the back page of the Guardian yesterday. The barcode, which is a machine-readable representation of data, allows the newspaper to be recognised by scanners at checkout counters, supermarkets and other such outlets.
The newspaper's general manager, Douglas Wilson, says the use of the barcode is a step in modernising how the newspaper relates to both dealers and consumers. "It makes it simple for the newspaper to be sold at checkout counters. Now it can be scanned along with other items," said Wilson. "We are happy to do it and also happy to be the first newspaper to take that step." Wilson said the use of the barcode was in keeping with international standards, as newspapers around the world had already taken that step.
