Police have identified a 27-year-old PH taxi driver and his 30-year-old accomplice as the men involved in a string of kidnapping and rape offences in central and north Trinidad. The suspects, who have several addresses in La Horquetta and Sangre Grande, were identified by victims who were kidnapped and sexually assaulted.
They were also identified in several outstanding larceny and robbery offences. Police said they learned that one of the suspects held in St Joseph last week Thursday, was out on bail for two pending rape charges. A senior officer of the Central Division said they feared that rape suspects who were released on bail were returning to society continuing to commit these crimes.
According to reports, police officers led by Supt Johnny Abraham, Insp Wayne Lawrence and Sgt Susan John held the men in a car, pretending to be a taxi driver and a passenger. Following their arrests, the officers searched the men's homes and found a number of mobile phones, flash drives, laptops and digital cameras, which they believe were stolen.
Police said some of the digital cameras contained images of possible victims and one of the flash drives had information similar to one which was reported stolen from a house in Manzanilla, four years ago. Two Nissan Sunny B14 cars were also recovered which police said might have been from recent thefts at shopping malls in Chaguanas.
The men are expected be placed on a series of identification parades at various stations around the country. Police are asking victims of similar crimes to contact or come to the Chaguanas Police Station to identify the stolen items.
