An Army private was killed yesterday in a motorcycle accident in Arima. According to reports, at around 10.45 am, Private Robert John, 25, of Allamanda Drive, Gasparillo, was riding his motorcycle in a westerly direction on the Churchill-Roosevelt highway when he lost control near Demerara Road in Arima. John reportedly fell onto the roadway, while his motorcycle crashed into the median which separates the lanes of the highway. Police believe that although John was wearing a helmet, he died on impact because of the high speed he was travelling. John’s body was found almost 250 metres from his badly damaged motorbike. Up to late yesterday the road fatality toll for the year to date was 81, according to statistics from the Highway Patrol and Traffic Branch. At the time of the accident, John was returning from the T&T Regiment’s Camp Cumuto base, where he was stationed. He was attached to the First Engineering Battalion.
