An Army pri­vate was killed yes­ter­day in a mo­tor­cy­cle ac­ci­dent in Ari­ma. Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, at around 10.45 am, Pri­vate Robert John, 25, of Al­la­man­da Dri­ve, Gas­par­il­lo, was rid­ing his mo­tor­cy­cle in a west­er­ly di­rec­tion on the Churchill-Roo­sevelt high­way when he lost con­trol near De­mer­ara Road in Ari­ma. John re­port­ed­ly fell on­to the road­way, while his mo­tor­cy­cle crashed in­to the me­di­an which sep­a­rates the lanes of the high­way. Po­lice be­lieve that al­though John was wear­ing a hel­met, he died on im­pact be­cause of the high speed he was trav­el­ling. John's body was found al­most 250 me­tres from his bad­ly dam­aged mo­tor­bike. Up to late yes­ter­day the road fa­tal­i­ty toll for the year to date was 81, ac­cord­ing to sta­tis­tics from the High­way Pa­trol and Traf­fic Branch. At the time of the ac­ci­dent, John was re­turn­ing from the T&T Reg­i­ment's Camp Cu­mu­to base, where he was sta­tioned. He was at­tached to the First En­gi­neer­ing Bat­tal­ion.
