Three police officers remained warded in hospital yesterday after being seriously injured in a car crash in Chaguanas on Sunday afternoon. According to reports, around 3 pm the officers were transporting a prisoner in an unmarked vehicle along Railway Road, Chaguanas. As they reached the Chaguanas Magistrates' Court, a blue BMW, travelling west along Ramsaran Street, reportedly broke a traffic light and collided with the police vehicle.
The officers - PC Dabreau, Phillips and police photographer Cpl Rawlins Barclay - were injured. The prisoner, who was seated in the back of the vehicle, also suffered serious head injuries.
They were taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility and then transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope. Up to late yesterday, they remained warded in a stable condition. The driver of the BMW escaped unhurt. After the accident, both vehicles were towed and impounded at the Chaguanas Police Station. The driver of the BMW was questioned for several hours and was later released after giving a written statement, police said.
A police source close to the investigation said yesterday that investigators were considering charging the driver with dangerous driving and driving without due care and attention. Investigations are continuing.
