A teenager was shot dead near his home in Morvant yesterday. Police said David Cabrera, 19, of Red Hill Extension, Morvant, around 11.45 am told relatives that he was going to a nearby shop to purchase food to cook for lunch. Moments after leaving home, relatives heard a volley of gunshots coming from outside their home.

They responded and found Cabrera lying on the roadway with gunshot wounds to the upper body. He was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital by his uncle Kurt Millet. Cabrera was pronounced dead on arrival by doctors at the hospital. His body was ordered removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James where a post-mortem is expected to be performed today.

Investigators said although they had no motive for the killing, they knew Cabrera quite well. His killing took the murder toll to 189. There were 182 murders for the corresponding period last year. Inspector Ramlogan, Sgt Boodoo and officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force visited the scene of the shooting and are continuing investigations.
