Residents of the quiet fishing village of Matura were in a state of shock yesterday following the murder of a 25-year-old villager. Police said around 2.20 am, Dion "Coco Seed" Thomas and his common-law wife, Michelle Khan, were asleep at their home at Morton Drive, Matura, when they heard a window pane being smashed. Thomas went outside to check on the disturbance and after a couple of minutes, Khan reported she heard several gunshots. When she responded she found Thomas lying in the yard with gunshot wounds to the head and upper body. He was pronounced dead by the District Medical Officer. A man, who was dressed in black, was seen fleeing the scene.
Owing to poor lighting, Khan was unable to describe her husband's attacker to investigators. A post-mortem was performed on Thomas' body yesterday morning at the Forensic Science Centre, St James. Homicide detectives said Thomas was not known to be involved in criminal activity and up to late yesterday a motive for his killing had yet to be determined. The murder toll up to yesterday afternoon stood at 194. ASP Neville Sankar, Cpl Devon Hazel and Cpl Steele-Williams are investigating.
