While police investigate the horrific death of Barrackpore mother Rose Persad, who died when a car slammed into her in front of her business place on Sunday, it remains uncertain whether the driver will be charged with any offence. A senior officer said police are double-checking to determine whether dangerous driving played a part in the accident. But he said it seems unlikely that there was any wrongdoing and that it may have been just an “accident.” He said following the tragic incident, in which the car skidded off Rochard Road, Barrackpore and into the 47-year-old, the driver was administered a breathalyser test.

However, it was revealed that the breathalyser gave a reading of zero. An autopsy on Persad’s body was expected to be carried out yesterday at the mortuary of the San Fernando General Hospital. Reports are that Persad and her tenant Sheila Harrinam were in the front yard of the establishment when a red Nissan Almera slid along the wet road and crashed into a shed. The car then jumped a drain and smashed two concrete pillars before crashing into Persad. Villagers rushed to assist the mother of four who was pinned beneath the car. However she was pronounced dead on arrival at the San Fernando General Hospital. Persad’s husband Basdeo Persad said he lost his wife on the day of their 28th wedding anniversary.
