Residents of Febeau Village and Bourg Mulatresse can now benefit from a Community Emergency Response Team (Cert) bin in the event of a disaster in their area. The San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation in collaboration with the Community Development Ministry placed a Cert bin at the Bourg Mulatresse Community Centre on Wednesday. The bin contains shovels, garbage bags, rakes, a chainsaw and other equipment to assist the residents in the event of any disaster. Councillor for Febeau Village/Bourg Mulatresse, Roger Celestine, presented the equipment to Wilbert Lezama, custodian of the centre.
He said the bins were necessary due to the rainy season. "It is a very great idea. My area is Febeau, Bourg Mulatresse and especially during this time for La Canoa," Celestine said. "It is very hard-pressed in this area to deal with and now we can mobilise the community and deal with the situation and help ourselves," he said. Gail Bacchus-Paris, disaster co-ordinator of the corporation, said ongoing training has been provided since February. "This has become necessary for communities to become resilient in the case of disasters," Bacchus-Paris said.
