Chaguanas Mayor Orlando Nagessar has mounted an aggressive 24-hour campaign to wreck cars parked illegally in the borough. Speaking with the T&T Guardian on Thursday, Nagessar said he is fed up with lawlessness in the busy central town and wants Jack Warner, the new Minster of National Security, to help clean up the borough.
Nagessar said businessmen and used-car dealers are the worst offenders. The mayor said he had received numerous complaints from burgesses about used-car dealers blocking roadways and using the roadside to wash cars, which contributes to congestion.
Nagessar said the borough had attempted to talk with the car dealers and requested a meeting with several of them. However, he said, one dealer ripped up the invitation and "tossed it in the face of the borough corporation official." Nagessar said "We have a new sheriff in town (referring to Warner) and we want him to help us to clean up the place. We have to get rid of the drunk drivers, the drug dealers and criminals.
"Both the Chaguanas Police, under Senior Superintendent Dulalchan, and the borough police, under Inspector Octave Lewis, are lending their support. We have started wrecking on a 24-hour basis. We are fed up of begging these lawbreakers. "We have to take a hard stance to end lawlessness in this country, and Warner is the man to do it. We fully support him. "Local Government Minister Rambachan has also given us his full support in this matter."
