Two women were among three people killed in separate road accidents in Cocorite, Macoya and Cunupia between Thursday afternoon and yesterday morning. The victims have been identified as:
•Jassodramatie Jhangoor, 43, of Governor Trace, Las Lomas
•Yanish "Jenna" Armstrong, a citizen of the Czech Republic
•Vishram Rambally, 25, of Arima
Up to late yesterday the road fatality toll, according to statistics from the Highway Patrol and Traffic Branch, stood at 96 for the year. In the first incident around 4.45 pm on Thursday, Jhangoor was travelling north along the Southern Main Road in Warrenville, Cunupia, when she collided with a vehicle heading in the opposite direction.
Both drivers were taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility, where Jhangoor was pronounced dead on arrival. Sankar was transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope, where he remained warded in a critical condition up to late yesterday. Jhangoor, a PH taxi driver, was on her way to the Mt Hope Medical Sciences Complex to visit her ailing mother, police said.
Meanwhile, almost 12 hours later, Armstrong was killed and three of her friends injured in a crash on the Western Main Road in Cocorite. Police said Armstrong was the front seat passenger of a blue Mercedes Benz car which was driven by a businessman. The other passengers of the car were identified by police as Aboela Sandy and Craig Snell.
Investigators said around 4.15 am the friends were driving west along the main road when the driver lost control of the car near Westshore Medical Centre. The vehicle reportedly slammed into a utility pole before hitting the median and landing on its side. Police and fire officers were summoned to the scene and removed the badly injured friends.
The friends were returning from the 51 Degrees nightclub on Cipriani Boulevard in Port-of-Spain, police said. St James police are continuing investigations into the crash. In the third accident, Rambally was driving along the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway heading to his home in Arima when he hit the back of a red-band maxi-taxi near the Macoya intersection. Rambally was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex were he died several hours later while receiving treatment.
