A 55-year-old Cunupia farmer died on Monday after he was stung by a swarm of bees. A report said around 2 pm, Sundar Persad, of Ramgoolie Trace, Chin Chin Road, Cunupia, left home in his tractor to plough a piece of land a short distance away at Mungaloo Road. Several hours later, Persad’s wife reported receiving a phone call from her husband. He told her he had been attacked by a swarm of bees.

His wife along with several of his relatives went to the plot of land and found Persad unconscious. Both Persad and his tractor were covered by the bees, police said. Officials from the Apiaries Unit of the Ministry of Food Production were contacted to assist in spraying the swarm of bees. Police said Persad’s body bore hundreds of bee stings.

He was pronounced dead on the scene by a District Medical Officer (DMO). Investigators believe that Persad’s tractor might have come into contact with the bee hive while driving through the property.
