Fire yesterday destroyed the multi-million-dollar home of central businessman Jawarharlal Deosaran. Deosaran is the owner of Amalgamated Sanitation Co Ltd based in El Socorro. His mansion, at Carapichaima, Freeport, was completely destroyed. For over three hours, more than 25 fire officers from the Chaguanas and Couva Fire Stations battled with the fire while relatives and friends looked on.

In an interview, Assistant Divisional Fire Officer Clunis Wallen said the Chaguanas Fire Station received a call about 9.21 am. Three appliances, an ambulance and a fire water tanker were sent to the scene. Fire prevention officers are expected to return to the house today in an attempt to ascertain what caused the fire. Wallen said Deosaran’s grandson, Kierron Sookhai, admitted to seeing fire on the steps of the house.

Sookhai used a fire extinguisher to put it out. However, he then noticed smoke coming from a playroom. The door of the playroom suddenly became jammed, Wallen said. By the time firemen arrived, the fire had already spread inside the playroom. Wallen and his team tried to bring the fire under control. However, the roof caved in. Deosaran and his relatives declined comment.
