Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar's decision to appoint former banker Larry Howai as Minister of Finance and the Economy has struck a positive chord with citizens, according to the results of a Nacta poll. But Vasant Bharath should not have been moved from the Ministry of Food Production to Trade and Industry.
There has been widespread support for the appointment of Jack Warner as National Security Minister, however. Citing Howai's appointment, respondents were also of the view that more individuals from the private sector should be approached to join the Cabinet to make the Government more effective.
While there was agreement on the Prime Minister's decision to reconfigure the Cabinet, strong disapproval reigned about several of her ministerial choices. The size of the Cabinet remains an uncomfortable issue. Meanwhile, the tactics used by Warner to remove members of the Highway Re-route Movement from the group's campsite has been described as high-handed and underscored the need for more meaningful dialogue in the future.
When asked about the court's decision to dismiss the case against former prime minister Basdeo Panday on his failure to disclose information regarding a London bank account to the Integrity Commission, respondents expressed relief that the matter was now closed.
