The experimental traffic plan for west Port-of-Spain kicked off from midnight last night with few major problems, according toWorks Minister Emmanuel George. In a press conference held at the ministry's office at Richmond Street, Port-of-Spain this morning, George praised the efforts of the police and traffic wardens who were on the spot to help drivers. George said, however, thatthere was congestion at the Roxy roundabout andunexpected heavy traffic at Mucurapo Road."The traffic coming east conflictedwith the traffic heading west at the roundabout," George said. The minister said he was out on the road from 5 a.m.and saw very little traffic along the reconfigured routes. Around 8 a.m., however, the flow of traffic increased, he said.He also appealed to drivers to be aware of trafficsigns and follow instructions from the police."This experimental scheme is something that was mooted some months ago, and it was a work in progress before it actually began."A lot of work went in for the preparation of the scheme," George said.He said there was ongoingconsultation with taxi drivers, residents and businesspeople before the plan went into effect.More stakeholder consultations are expected to take place at the end of this week. The plan is being run on a trial basis for three months.
