As the new traffic plan for west Port-of-Spain came into effect at midnight on Sunday, Director of Highways Roger Ganesh is appealing to the public to give it time to work, saying it was too early to judge whether the plan was a definite success or failure. But he expressed confidence that with some "tweaking" the plan would work. Ganesh added that people should not jump to conclusions and unfairly criticise the plan but rather sensitise themselves to the new routes. Saying he drove through St James and Woodbrook yesterday, Ganesh noted congestion was at a minimum, adding that he was very pleased.
He said, however, there were several areas which needed to be re-examined, one being the Roxy Roundabout. The plan, Ganesh said, was deliberately implemented when schools were closed for the July-August vacations so that glitches could be ironed out before the new term opens in September. "It can't be 100 per cent perfect, but (in) the areas which need to be addressed, we are rectifying those problems. We have to give it a couple more days to really see how it goes," he said. Ganesh also suggested people properly plan their trips into Port-of-Spain, saying there was more than one route to use.
