Min­is­ter of Health Dr Fuad Khan has said the his­tol­ogy lab­o­ra­to­ry at the Er­ic Williams Med­ical Sci­ences Com­plex, Mt Hope, will need to be com­plete­ly ren­o­vat­ed. He made the com­ment af­ter an in­spec­tion by Min­istry of Health of­fi­cials ear­li­er this week. He was speak­ing at a press con­fer­ence on the min­istry's Na­tion­al Well­ness Day. Khan, how­ev­er, could not say how much the ren­o­va­tion would cost but said it would be ide­al for the project to be com­plet­ed by ear­ly next year. The lab was closed af­ter a gas leak made sev­er­al em­ploy­ees ill. Tests tak­en af­ter the leak was re­paired showed that the air qual­i­ty was re­stored to nor­mal, but Khan says an over­haul of the lab is need­ed. "The ven­ti­la­tion area has been fixed...Oth­er than that, OS­HA and the min­istry had a look at it and they've been di­rect­ed to fix the lab prop­er­ly, but what we rel­ly need to do is re­fur­bish the en­tire lab," he said. "We have to get con­sul­tants in the Min­istry of Works to go in to check it out and then it can be ten­dered for but what I'm re­al­ly look­ing for is a mo­bile lab. "What is hap­pen­ing is work­ers were feel­ing a bit un­com­fort­able, so we're try­ing to make it as com­fort­able as pos­si­ble." He al­so said the re­port on the oph­thal­mol­o­gy lab, al­so in the com­plex, was not yet com­plet­ed but he re­ceived oral con­fir­ma­tion that many changes would need to be made to op­er­a­tions at the lab. Fol­low­ing re­ports of a wait­ing list in the thou­sands and doc­tors re­fer­ring pa­tients to their pri­vate of­fices, an au­dit of the oph­thal­mol­o­gy lab was or­dered by the min­istry ear­li­er this month.
