Minister of Health Dr Fuad Khan has said the histology laboratory at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, will need to be completely renovated. He made the comment after an inspection by Ministry of Health officials earlier this week. He was speaking at a press conference on the ministry's National Wellness Day. Khan, however, could not say how much the renovation would cost but said it would be ideal for the project to be completed by early next year. The lab was closed after a gas leak made several employees ill. Tests taken after the leak was repaired showed that the air quality was restored to normal, but Khan says an overhaul of the lab is needed. "The ventilation area has been fixed...Other than that, OSHA and the ministry had a look at it and they've been directed to fix the lab properly, but what we relly need to do is refurbish the entire lab," he said. "We have to get consultants in the Ministry of Works to go in to check it out and then it can be tendered for but what I'm really looking for is a mobile lab. "What is happening is workers were feeling a bit uncomfortable, so we're trying to make it as comfortable as possible." He also said the report on the ophthalmology lab, also in the complex, was not yet completed but he received oral confirmation that many changes would need to be made to operations at the lab. Following reports of a waiting list in the thousands and doctors referring patients to their private offices, an audit of the ophthalmology lab was ordered by the ministry earlier this month.
