Four Chi­nese na­tion­als charged with pos­ses­sion of an un­cus­tomed good yes­ter­day plead­ed not guilty when they ap­peared in court. Ac­com­pa­nied by two trans­la­tors versed in Man­darin and Can­tonese lan­guages, Guan­bin Huang, Shan­long Jiang, Yuyan Qui and Zhen­wei Guo, shook their heads to in­di­cate no, when ques­tioned by Mag­is­trate Chris­tine Charles in the Port-of-Spain Fifth Court. The four are charged that on De­cem­ber 19, 2008, at Al­lan Street, Fair­ways, Mar­aval, they know­ing­ly har­bored cer­tain un­cus­tomed goods, name­ly 136 cas­es and ten bot­tles of Black and White Scotch Whisky, and 339 cas­es of John­ny Walk­er Scotch Whisky. Cus­toms and Ex­cise at­tor­ney Jonathon Soo Hon in­formed the court that the pros­e­cu­tion had five wit­ness­es and were pre­pared to set a tri­al date. How­ev­er, prob­lems arose af­ter the mag­is­trate learnt that the two in­ter­preters may not be in the coun­try in Feb­ru­ary next year, when tri­al dates are avail­able. De­fence at­tor­ney Gilbert Pe­ter­son SC in­di­cat­ed to the court he would be out of the coun­try un­til Sep­tem­ber and would be amenable to the mat­ter be­ing ad­journed to Sep­tem­ber 21 for men­tion, when all par­ties will in­di­cate their readi­ness
