Communications Minister Jamal Mohammed says this year's meaning and observance of Emancipation should be greater as Trinidad and Tobago will also celebrate its 50th Anniversary of Independence this month. Mohammed made the comment on Tuesday during his ministry's Emancipation Day lecture and luncheon at Level 5, Nicholas Towers, Port-of-Spain.
Emancipation Support Committee (ESC) member Shabaka Kambon, who spoke at the event, said the local African diaspora has "come a long way, but there's still a long way to go." Kambon said as a result of consultations between the ESC and the African Union, Emancipation Day was one of three days recognised throughout the African continent which is also celebrated on August 1.
