A Fyzabad man was spared a jail term for stealing a car yesterday but if he fails to pay $20,000 in compensation and a fine by?December 6 he could face up to eight years in prison. In passing sentence on Nazoordeen Khan yesterday Justice Anthony Carmona said: "The court must send a signal that demonstrates that this particular offence is a serious offence." Describing his actions as brazen since the car was parked 200 metres from the Fyzabad Police Station, the judge told Khan the only reason he was not jailed was because the matter was over nine years old. Carmona fined him $10,000 but he has to pay $3,000 by August 17. He also ordered him to pay $10,000 in compensation. The money must be paid by December 6 or he would serve four years on each.
Khan had pleaded guilty in the San Fernando?First Court to stealing a $25,000 Bluebird in Fyzabad on June 19, 2003. State attorney Jennifer Martin said around 9 pm Wendy Seepersadsingh parked her husband's car 200 feet from the police station and went to a function at the Fyzabad Sports Club. When she returned she found the car missing. When Khan was arrested he told the police he scrapped the car and the parts were at his home. The owners got back their car in parts, re-assembled it and then sold it, it was stated. His attorney Wilston?Campbell said he had eight previous convictions but he had changed his life and was remorseful.
