A Tableland, South Trinidad, man who tried to protect his wife from harassment is fighting for his life after being stabbed multiple times on Monday afternoon. Up to late yesterday, Kevin Roberts, 30, a mason of Second Branch, Monkey Town, New Grant, Princes Town, remained warded in a critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit of the San Fernando General Hospital.
Police said he received eight stab wounds to the left side of his chest, lower abdomen and left forearm. The knife reportedly cut through his intestines and narrowly missed his heart. Investigators said around 6.30 pm, Roberts spotted the assailant at Monkey Town Road and accused him of harrassing his wife. An argument ensued and it is reported that one of Roberts' female relatives jumped into the fracas and attacked the assailant.
Police said the man pulled out a knife from his waist and stabbed Roberts, leaving him lying on the roadside, bleeding from multiple wounds and with his intestines exposed. He was rushed to the Princes Town District Hospital where he received emergency treatment and was later transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital.
A team of officers, led by PC Benjamin, visited the scene and later apprehended a 29-year-old suspect. Statements were also taken from several of Roberts' relatives. Police said the suspect is expected to be charged for malicious wounding, pending investigations.
