A Special Reserve policeman was yesterday charged in connection with the $.5 million armed robbery in Princes Town last Sunday. The 38-year-old SRP was charged with two counts of robbery and possession of ammunition after the police received instructions from Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard. The officer, from Point Fortin, who previously worked at the Court and Process department at South Oropouche and Siparia police stations, is expected to appear before a Princes Town magistrate today. A police report said around 11.45 am, three armed security guards from G4S Security went to Sociabank Sales Centre at Craignish Village to replenish the automated banking machine. They were about to place two money bags in the cubicle when two gunmen ordered them to hand over the money bags and their guns. The gunmen then jumped into a waiting Nissan Almera car, which sped off. The guards alerted a passing police car and the cops went in search of the getaway car. There was an exchange of gunfire between the police and the suspects, who escaped into some bushes. The money was not recovered. Investigations were led by Sgt Hayden Manwarin and charges were laid by PC Dookee of the Princes Town Police Station.
