A San Juan man suspected of manufacturing home-made firearms was held by police on Thursday. The man was arrested at his home on Saw Mill Avenue, San Juan home, by officers from the North Eastern Division Robbery Squad. On Thursday afternoon, the lawmen searched the man's home and seized a home-made 9mm pistol.
Investigators said they also found several heavy power tools which they believe were used to manufacture illegal weapons. The man, who is well known to police, is said to have several pending matters in court for firearm-related offences. He is expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain magistrate on Monday. The same group of officers searched a used car dealership in Tunapuna and recovered a Glock pistol and several rounds of ammunition from a car.
Further investigations revealed that the car had been repossessed from its owner a month ago and was taken to the dealership to be sold. Both firearms were taken to the Forensic Science Centre in St James where ballistic testing will be done to determine if they were used recently. The exercise was co-ordinated by Supt John Daniel and included Sgt Maharaj, Cpl Taylor and PCs Clarke and Scipio.
