TSTT has had to bring in generators to restore electricity at its Diego Martin Exchange after the supply was disrupted when flooding hit the area yesterday. Corporate communications manager Graham Suite said electricity supply to the area had been lost and the floodwaters had damaged the communication cables. He explained the Diego Martin River runs directly behind the exchange.
"The back wall was demolished. The water overflowed. "It went onto the roadway. It is pretty serious. "We will have the generators as soon as possible, by today. We are hoping to restore power...The facility is almost completely exhausted," he said.
WASA shutdowns
Meanwhile, the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) issued a release saying it had shut down water-treatment facilities in north Trinidad because the intakes were clogged with silt and debris brought on by swollen rivers and problems with turbidity. Head of corporate communications Ellen Lewis advised that customers would experience some measure of interruption and should use their water efficiently. Among the plants that were out of order owing to the persistent rainfall were:
• Maraval Waterworks
• North Oropouche
• L&N Waterworks
• Las Lomas
• Caura
• Cumuto
• Acono
• Tompire
• Guanapo
• Quare Booster Station (ML)
