Former Works and Infrastructure Minister Jack Warner says his ministry did respond to Diego Martin Regional Corporation chairman Anthony Sammy’s calls for help in March. However, the National Security Minister said yesterday last Saturday’s devastation was not only caused by floods but from mounds of dirt which came crashing down from the mountainside. Warner, in a telephone interview yesterday, said he received Sammy’s letter and the ministry responded by doing drainage works in parts of Morne Coco Road, Diego Martin and Petit Valley. He added the Diego Martin river was also dredged.

However, he said, no one could have anticipated what happened on Saturday. “Those guys who were killed when the mountains came down... the mountains came down... it was not in the flat. When you look at the mountains you will see raw chunks of the mountains,” he said. Warner dismissed criticism from Opposition Leader, Diego Martin West MP Dr Keith Rowley, Diego Martin North East MP Colm Imbert and Diego Martin Central MP Dr Amery Browne as attempts to “score cheap political points.” Calls to Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma’s cellphone went unanswered.
