Worker killed as crane boom collapses

One man was killed and another seriously injured when the boom of a crane working near their job site in Sea Lots collapsed on Wednesday. According to reports, around 1 pm, David Cyrus, 61, of 12th Street, Barataria, and Michael Haynes, 23, of Blue Basin Road, Diego Martin, were working at Abattoir Road, Sea Lots, Port-of-Spain. Co-workers said the two were lifting crates of glass when the boom of the crane collapsed, crushing the two workers. Both men were freed from under the heavy metal beam by their co-workers.
 
Cyrus was pronounced dead on arrival at  Port-of-Spain General Hospital while Haynes was treated and warded. Haynes’ two legs were broken and he suffered serious internal injuries.
