Parliament breaks its mid-year recess today to debate aspects of the Financial Intelligence Unit law which needs to be in force by August 27, National Security Minister Jack Warner said yesterday. Parliament has been on its annual break since mid-July and was expected to resume next month. Today's House session begins at 10 am. Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet media briefing yesterday, Warner explained that the Lower House and Senate must sit to debate and pass two new aspects of the law which T&T?must comply with by this month. The FIU law and the local unit are intended to curb white-collar crime and terrorism. Warner said a foreign team of eight people would be coming to T&T?to interview himself, Finance Minister Larry Howai and Attorney General Anand Ramlogan, to "grill" the Government on how well T&T?had complied with the international charter involved in the issue. He said T&T?had made significant progress on attacking white-collar crime and after T&T "passes"?the team's scrutiny with "flying colours," it would be revealed just how much progress was made. Also during yesterday's media briefing, Communication Minister Jamal Mohammed dispelled rumours that September 3 might be a public holiday.
