There are no public playgrounds or green spaces for the children of Mafeking Old Road, Mafeking Village, Mayaro, to play. While some youngsters play on the dangerous road with their makeshift boxcarts and bicycles, others have found a comfortable spot in a nearby almond tree. Vinoo Lall said he built a tree house for his children and it has attracted other youngsters from the community even though the tree is on a low-lying spot that becomes muddy whenever it rains.
The young girls of the community have transformed the tree house into a giant doll house even though boys sometimes visit. Lall said the residents of the area want the relevant authorities to build speed bumps along the road since many children are either riding their bicycles or playing on the road in the rural community. He said sometimes indiscriminate people, especially visitors to Mayaro Beach speed along the roadway and show little or no concern for the youngsters in the area.
