Former prime minister Patrick Manning was rushed to hospital last night after collapsing at his Sumadh Gardens Vistabella, home. A source said Manning apparently suffered a seizure around 6.30 pm. His wife and former education minister Hazel Manning immediately contacted the Emergency Health Service ambulance. Manning was reportedly drenched in perspiration and was unconscious when paramedics arrived. A family doctor, who arrived at the house, administered an injection to Manning and by the time he reached the San Fernando General Hospital he regained consciousness. A source said Manning's blood sugar count was low.
A call to the family's home last night confirmed Manning had taken ill. A relative said they were waiting for information and could not give any further details except to say the former prime minister was hospitalised. Chairman of the South West Regional Health Authority, Lackram Bodoe, confirmed Manning was receiving medical care at the Accident and Emergency Department last night. "Mr Manning's condition is stable and he is being attended to by a team of doctors," Bodoe said. Manning, former political leader of the People's National Movement (PNM), suffered a cerebral embolism ( stroke) last January 23. He spent a few days at the San Fernando General Hospital and was then flown to Washington DC, USA, for further treatment. Early this month, Manning returned to Trinidad for the first time in six months.
