If you missed out on yesterday's special commemorative issue of the T&T Guardian, it's not too late to get a copy of this keepsake. A second edition will be available on Monday at all Guardian offices. When this 32-page special sold out at dealers all over the country early yesterday, the T&T Guardian decided to reprint it, in response to the massive and continuing demand from readers. Published to mark the occasion of T&T's 50th anniversary of Independence, this commemorative issue contains pages from the Trinidad Guardian (as it was then) from August 1962. This unique publication is exclusive to the T&T Guardian, the only national daily newspaper whose tradition dates back as far as Independence. (In fact, the T&T Guardian celebrates 95 years of publication tomorrow, September 2.) Republished in the original broadsheet format, the special Independence issue contains news stories, photos and special articles commissioned for the occasion from leading writers including Derek Walcott, CLR James, Dr JD Elder, architect John Newel Lewis and folklorist and artist Alfred Codallo.
As well as the national news, readers will find sports news, opinions, profiles and features in this replica of the "big paper"'-and a page of classified ads that reveal some startling differences between the cost of living today and 50 years ago! Yesterday, appreciative readers left comments on the T&T Guardian's Facebook page. Some of them read: "Thank you very much for that beautiful replica of the Guardian 50 years ago! I remember folding it in pieces to get a good read!" "Today is so awesome. Gonna make sure our copy gets kept in mint condition. Very, very cool work." "It's probably the best tribute any organisation could have given the nation on its 50th anniversary of independence....big congrats....enjoyed it immensely." The special commemorative issue of the T&T Guardian will go on sale on Monday at all Guardian offices. It will also be available free on Tuesday to all subscribers to the Guardian's e-edition.
