The magnificent display of fireworks put on by the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism to celebrate this country’s 50th Independence, had people screaming for more. The enthusiasm did not waver even though many people had to make their way to the Queens Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, through mud and severe traffic congestion. From as early as 7 pm, there was gridlock on Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain, as people tried to make their way to the QPS for the pre-fireworks show, “A Toast to the Nation.” The atmosphere was Carnival-like with hundreds coming out to take in the show.

The pre-fireworks display started at about 9.45 pm, lasted for just about 45 minutes and patrons in the packed Grand Stand did not hold back when showing their appreciation as they cheered and clapped. As the night sky lit up with beautiful colours, a video of Dr Eric Williams’ Independence speech played on the various large screen monitors placed around the venue. One woman said she journeyed from Moruga with her two children and even though it took almost two hours from Port-of-Spain to the venue, she felt it was well worth it. Another patron said he parked his car near Queens Hall in St Ann’s but the long walk to view the fireworks was worth it as “is only once we does turn 50.”
