Head of Government's Inter-Ministerial Committee on Constitutional Reform, Legal Affairs Minister Prakash Ramadhar is calling on citizens, members of political organisations and non-governmental organisations to contribute to the exercise by sharing their views via email, mail or calling his ministry.
In a release yesterday, Ramadhar, who is also the political leader of the Congress of the People, said the process of constitutional reform in T&T "must be undertaken with the requisite care for coherence and completeness." He said the exercise must also provide maximum opportunity for the participation of citizens and non-governmental organisations. Ramadhar said steps undertaken so far include:
• A careful study and review of previous constitutional reform exercises and of existing constitutional institutions as to their relevance and effectiveness
• Preparation of draft amendments for the implementation of changes on which the population has already expressed a desire for the inclusion via support for the proposals of the People's Partnership in the 2010 general election
• The very important question of the relationship between the two main islands in our constitutional framework is also being addressed by a parallel exercise led by the Attorney General
Ramadhar said the participation of nationals was very important to the success of the exercise.
