Acting Assistant Supt of Police Mahabal Daljitsingh has appeared in court charged with embezzlement, larceny and fraudulent conversion amounting to more than $130,000. Daljitsingh, 54, of Siparia, was granted $120,000 bail when he appeared before Siparia First Court magistrate Rae Roopchan. Daljitsingh, who has just over 32 years' service, surrendered at the Siparia Police Station yesterday after a warrant was issued by ASP Palloo.
Roopchan read the charges that between May 23, 2011 and April 10, 2012, Daljitsingh stole $130,320. He was also charged with embezzling $3,032 and $5,864.40 between May 24, 2011 and April 10, 2012, at the Penal Police Station. He is also accused of fraudulently converting $10,320 for his personal use. The offences are alleged to have taken place at the Penal Police Station. Court prosecutor Sgt Dridgenath Sookraj did not object to bail. The warrants for his arrest followed an investigation into allegations of misappropriation of funds at the Penal Police Station during an audit of money received from the Water and Sewerage Authority.
