Resh­ma Ra­goonath

Act­ing As­sis­tant Supt of Po­lice Ma­ha­bal Daljits­ingh has ap­peared in court charged with em­bez­zle­ment, lar­ce­ny and fraud­u­lent con­ver­sion amount­ing to more than $130,000. Daljits­ingh, 54, of Siparia, was grant­ed $120,000 bail when he ap­peared be­fore Siparia First Court mag­is­trate Rae Roopchan. Daljits­ingh, who has just over 32 years' ser­vice, sur­ren­dered at the Siparia Po­lice Sta­tion yes­ter­day af­ter a war­rant was is­sued by ASP Pal­loo.

Roopchan read the charges that be­tween May 23, 2011 and April 10, 2012, Daljits­ingh stole $130,320. He was al­so charged with em­bez­zling $3,032 and $5,864.40 be­tween May 24, 2011 and April 10, 2012, at the Pe­nal Po­lice Sta­tion. He is al­so ac­cused of fraud­u­lent­ly con­vert­ing $10,320 for his per­son­al use. The of­fences are al­leged to have tak­en place at the Pe­nal Po­lice Sta­tion. Court pros­e­cu­tor Sgt Drid­genath Sookraj did not ob­ject to bail. The war­rants for his ar­rest fol­lowed an in­ves­ti­ga­tion in­to al­le­ga­tions of mis­ap­pro­pri­a­tion of funds at the Pe­nal Po­lice Sta­tion dur­ing an au­dit of mon­ey re­ceived from the Wa­ter and Sew­er­age Au­thor­i­ty.
