Less than a week after heavy rains caused a section of the road at Scotland Terrace, Andalusia, Maraval, to collapse, repair works were completed a day before the deadline set by the contractor. Residents have continued to express gratitude to Beckles Environmental Services for fulfilling their promise to have the road reopened last Thursday.
Brian Beckles yesterday confirmed the repairs were completed on Wednesday night, after workers agreed to work longer hours to ensure the problem was rectified. At least 26 households were cut off when heavy rains on September 6 caused the road to collapse. Residents, who included two pregnant women, had to use a makeshift bridge leading into and out of the front yard of Peter and Mayling Aleong, which was being used as a thoroughfare for people to reach their homes.
Speaking with the T&T Guardian on Friday, an exuberant Beckles said: "We worked through the rain and long into the night to ensure we got it done by the deadline we gave." Beckles said the newly-constructed bridge would be able to cope with the increased volume of water from heavy rains. He said an affected resident, Keith Downes, had been able to move back into his house as the electricity supply had been restored.
